In April 2010, Dr. Oetker acquired the well established businesses of “Ital Pizza” – South Africa’s favourite frozen pizza, “Nice’n Easy” frozen meals, and “Green Valley” frozen vegetables from the Finlar group.
In September 2010, the world famous Dr. Oetker Ristorante thin crust frozen pizza was launched in South Africa – bringing the “Real Italian Restaurant Taste” to your home.

Global success

With its roots and its headquarters in Bielefeld, Northern Germany, the Dr. Oetker family enterprise pursues its business activities in 40+ countries.

Today, the Dr. Oetker brand can be seen internationally within baking powders, baking mixes, dessert mixes, cereals, conserves, frozen pizza, frozen pizza snacks, yogurts, and chilled desserts and in some countries with national specialities such as savoury snacks, teas, and frozen ready meals.

Production and sales companies operate not only in all European countries, but Dr. Oetker brands can be found on all six continents. The internationalisation of the business will continue to be driven forward allowing more and more consumers to enjoy Dr. Oetker products.

An international family enterprise is growing!

In the beginning of 2010, Richard Oetker, the younger brother of Dr. h. c. August Oetker, becomes chairman of the Dr. Oetker GmbH. He continues to pursue the owner family’s path of entrepreneurial success.  The core tenet of this success stems from a constant drive towards ongoing innovation. Dr. Oetker, a family with German roots and international objectives, goes optimistic into the future, always following the principle:  "Quality is the best recipe".

Internationalisation under Dr. h. c. August Oetker

In the early 1980s, Dr. h. c. August Oetker, great-grandson of the company's founder, entered the board of the company. New markets are successfully developed for the Dr. Oetker brand. From 1991, new organisations and subsidiaries were formed in Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland. In 2007 and 2008, Dr. Oetker opened offices in China, India, Argentina, and the USA.

The first Frozen Pizza

At a time when increasing numbers of freezers were finding their way into households, Dr. Oetker launches the first frozen pizza in Germany in 1970. Innovations by Dr. Oetker continue to cater for changing consumer needs, constantly improve quality, and expand the product range.

Dr. Richard Kaselowsky continues the tradition

After the death of Dr. August Oetker, the founder of the company, his son-in-law Dr. Richard Kaselowsky took over the business in 1920. At that time, the products were already being manufactured and distributed by more than 600 employees. Dr. Kaselowsky further expanded the business internationally establishing subsidiaries in France, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, and Italy during 1920 – 1930.

The first part of company history

In 1900, Dr. Oetker abandoned the chemist's shop, moved into a newly built factory in Bielefeld's Lutterstraße and, a few years later, ventured into foreign markets for the first time.

The first branded product

Among the lasting achievements of the company founder was the creation of one of Germany´s first branded products.

Moreover, he proofed entrepreneurial vision by protecting the trade mark for his products. The red and white "Light head" symbolises the brand on all Dr. Oetker products and signals highest quality to the consumer.

It all began with baking powder!

It all began in the back room of a Bielefeld chemist's shop in 1891: the young pharmacist Dr. August Oetker was busy working late into the night with apothecaries' scales, mortars, and various powders – he was developing the baking powder Backin. His innovative idea was to fill small paper bags with precisely the right quantity of baking powder for one pound of flour, a revolution for baking!

Guarantee of success

Because of the exact proportions of the mixture and the quality of the raw materials used, Dr. Oetker was able to guarantee that each cake would turn out successful. This was seen as a true innovation for those who loved to bake because it delivered true convenience and guaranteed perfect results every time. The baking powder invented by Justus Liebig, by contrast, was neither suitable for storage nor neutral in taste – for its time, then, Dr. Oetker's Backin was a sensational innovation, and quickly helped to make baking a frequent activity in domestic kitchens.

Dr. August Oetker – the first steps

August Oetker was born on 6 January 1862 as the son of Adolph August Oetker and Bertha Oetker. After secondary school he went to high school in Bückeburg, where he graduated in 1878. Probably 1884, he came to Hanau to work for a company that produced mainly equipment for pharmacies. Oetker started his professional life with some first unsuccessful entrepreneurial experiments in Berlin.
